Remember in "The Graduate" (1967) when Walter Brooke tells Dustin Hoffman about the great investment opportunity of the future? Well, if they made that movie in 2014, here's what he'd say instead: "I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Are you listening? Girls. There's a great future in girls. Think about it. Will you think about it?"
How does investing in girls help improve the world economy? Educated girls make more money over their lifetime. They pull themselves out of poverty, and they bring their children (who are likely to be fewer and healthier) and their communities with them. Plan Canada's Because I Am a Girl project works to give girls around the world equal access to health care, education, protection, independence, and an opportunity to participate in society. As a planet, we're wasting a huge amount of potential. By failing to educate and empower girls, we're losing the brilliance they could bring to our global future. Have a look at these girls and try to tell me they don't give you hope. It's time to invest in a sure thing — girls.
