Futures of House and Terra Nova In Question

The futures of Fox’s hit House and freshman sci-fi series Terra Nova are still up in the air. The network didn’t announce whether or not they were going to pick up either show for next season, which has left the shows in tough situations, reports Deadline.

House creator David Shore wants enough notice so that he can wrap up the series properly in case this is the last season, and Terra Nova needs to start production in April in order to have an episode ready in time for a fall premiere.

The decision, or lack thereof, might have to do with the fact that Fox has yet to debut three new dramas that might prove to have bigger ratings than both House and Terra Nova.

Alcatraz (produced by J.J. Abrams) is yet another contender for the title of “The Next Lost” while The Finder and Touch will premiere with high hopes in the upcoming months.

The past battles the future on Terra Nova finale

The Shannons on Terra Nova (Fox, Citytv, 8 p.m.) have had a tough fall. It’s not every family that’s asked to go from being The Jetsons to The Flintstones in the blink of an eye.

Tonight is the two-hour season finale of the family’s odyssey 85 million years into the past. The sci-fi drama recently revealed that diabolical interests from the future Earth are looking to mine the resources of the past. So, this week, the stage is set for a battle between the past and the future – with the fate of the Terra Nova colony hanging in the balance.

A new group of humans from 2149 are scheduled to come through the portal to the past, and Col. Taylor (Stephen Lang) and company have learned it could consist of more saboteurs or spies, or even an invasion force from the future.

The Shannon family’s on-screen bond is shared by the actors themselves, who were brought to the exotic Gold Coast in Australia, for filming. The rainforest landscape helped them pretend they were in the ancient, untamed past.

“We all walked in as if (we were) the Shannon family walking in on this beautiful world they’d never seen before,” Alberta-born actor Landon Liboiron, who plays son Josh Shannon, told Postmedia News in an on-set interview in October. “It was pretty brilliant.”

The show itself is still looking for a vote of confidence from FOX in the form of a second season, but cast member Jason O’Mara recently tweeted that “everyone involved remains confident and optimistic.” (source)

Fox Considers the Pros and Cons of Renewing Terra Nova

Before they head off on their holiday breaks, execs at Fox will be making a list, and checking it at least twice, as they try to determine the fate of freshman drama Terra Nova. It’s been known for a while that network brass would have to make an early call on a second season of the show, thanks to its complex production schedule and the fact that Fox long ago determined that Terra Nova’s first season would end this month after thirteen episodes. Now Vulture hears producers on the show will meet with the network to pitch their vision for a second season in the next few days, and that a verdict from Fox execs could come very shortly thereafter — possibly as early as next week. While ratings for the dino drama have underwhelmed (particularly opposite T-Rex-size expectations), determining whether Nova will live on or suddenly become extinct promises to be a close call for Fox suits.

The show’s Nielsen ratings are key. And on the surface, things don’t look good. Right from the start, viewer interest in Terra Nova has been less than what many industry insiders expected. The show’s incredibly hyped two-hour debut attracted smaller tune-in among the key adults 18 to 49 demo than far less promoted newcomers such as ABC’s Once Upon a Time or Revenge. Worse, the show has trended downward ever since, falling as much as 30 percent off its debut some weeks.
